Coming Back to the Start

Just as the new year starts, this course will start. Just as an old year ends, I tend to reflect on the past events and formulate plans for the upcoming year. As with all other previous experiences, in reflection, what happens never matched what I anticipated. Hindsight, on course design, and in life, can't always predict what will happen. I never anticipated the impact this course has had on my professional and personal learning journey. As I do at each year's end, I review and reflect on the previous iteration of this online course and wonder how to make it more meaningful, enhance the experiences for the students and explore how to map things out differently to make it a welcoming space to learn. I'll continue to adjust, adapt and iterate as the students come into the learning spaces, just as I've done in physical classroom spaces. It's definitely more challenging in digital designs but it's possible - by reaching out, reading carefully and responding thoughtfully. I'm in this with my students - learning as I teach.

As I come back to the start, it's good to get a course trailer together to showcase and get excited about the upcoming work. Here's this year's version!

Selfies are not necessarily selfish

This week's conversations were about selfies, using selfie activities in the classroom and how to apply selfie and selfless image capture to digital literacy. Ideas included the importance of ensuring that permissions and protocols were in place prior to completing selfie activities. Ensuring that students feelings and emotions are considered in this type of activity is essential. Comfort and self-esteem were two major considerations. Creating selfless images, where others are included in the process of taking the images, or others are considered when sharing images were insights for many who viewed the Jonathan Worth video.
