Week One

Return to Weekly Schedule

Getting into digital spaces

This first week is about becoming familiar with each other and the digital spaces for this course. Explore. Get a feel for the landscape. Look for connections. Orient and introduce yourself.
At the end of this week you will be able to:
 * express your interests and relevant background knowledge using a variety of digital tools (survey, discussion, images)
 * tell about your self, your interests, your perspectives in written and graphic formats (in your 'selfie' story)
 * locate and make reference to course information in D2L and on the course website

How to get Started

  • Begin by reading the course information and becoming familiar with the assignment expectations.
  • Then review the information about the OnEdMentors experience from their site. Complete the survey to establish your interest to the OnEdMentor organizers.
  • In D2L this week introduce yourself and share one goal for your learning in this course.
  • Then, get familiar with SLACK as an alternative tool for collaboration and communication. JOIN using the link provided by your instructor. Download the app and get it set up with manageable notifications for your personal work schedule.

Something to think about:

As we begin this course, I'd like you to consider the use of selfies in the classroom.
Watch this video by Jonathan Worth. Consider how his story about Selfless Selfies could be included in the classroom for the age/grade in which you hope to teach.
Would you do this activity as a classroom teacher? Why or why not?
Consider how this type of activity could impact students, promote social justice issues or heighten awareness for a cause.
How would you ensure that student privacy and safety is managed and maintained while exploring selfies with students?

Readings

  • Get to know the course. Scan the pages on this course site that support your learning and work in this course. Be aware of information and resources found here.
  • Search and read about how to use D2L if you are new to this learning management system. We will use this for course DISCUSSIONS and assignment completion.
  • Read the tip sheet and view the videos about how to use SLACK since this may be a new digital tool to use. We'll use SLACK for CONVERSATIONS, sharing inquiry projects with others, and DIRECT MESSAGES for this course.
  • Read about the OnEdMentors project so you know more about this part of your course experience.

Activities

  1. Complete the 'getting to know you' survey in Google Forms. The link is also found in D2L and was emailed. You need your university email user ID to access this survey.
  2. Register for a FREE Digital Human Library account as AND complete the survey for the ONedMentors Connect process.
  3. Sign up/accept the invitation to join SLACK. This tip sheet may help you get started.
  4. Start thinking about what you'd like to explore for your inquiry project. KEEP IT SIMPLE and manageable. This is not a long course and time is limited for this exploration.
